Currently reading this – Historical fiction and the allegorical truth of colonial violence in the Proposition, which is uber satisfying not only my longing for this Aussie neo-western masterpiece of a film, but also the rekindled interest in scouting the internet for dissertation papers and articles on revisionist historical films.

“(…) holocaustal events, which function ‘exactly as infantile traumas [... ] cannot be simply forgotten or put out of mind, but neither can they be adequately remembered’ (20). The traumatic structure or ‘modernist de-realisation’ of such an event, and the difficulty it poses for those who inherit it and those who try to represent it, is said to lead either to the seductions of myth and melodrama (26) in popular genres, or to fantasies of ‘intellectual mastery’ in modernist narratives (32).

Rejecting the modern electronic media’s recorded images as manipulations which ‘explode1 the event (23), White concludes that, anti-narrative non-stories produced by literary modernism offer the only prospect for adequate representations of the kinds of ‘unnatural’ events-including the Holocaust-that mark our era and distinguish it absolutely from all of the ‘history’ that has come before it. Historians engaged with cinema have questioned White’s claim that only modernist literary techniques have the potential to de-fetishise ‘both events and fantasy accounts of them which deny the threat they pose’ (32). Rosenstone, for instance, has become the champion of a postmodern canon of history films that, among other things, ‘glory in their own selectivity’ and make sense of past events ‘in a partial and open-ended, rather than totalised, manner’, making use of ‘fragmentary and/or poetic knowledge’.21 But he goes further than creating a new, highly selective canon: he claims that the postmodern, self-reflexive history film, with its contradictory elements and multiple points of view, has much to teach historians, especially those social and cultural historians who recognise the need for a postmodern historiography but, so far, have failed to find a postmodern form.22″ / Felicity Collins, Cultural Studies Review, March 2008

Miss Meowreese Minou has just discovered that licking stink bugs has the smelly potential of fondling a skunk’s tummy. Frantic spasms. Check. Jumping like a wild pony and knocking down chairs in her way. Check. Check. Spasm. Stupid human looking scared. Licking paws in awe and disgust. Check. Paws reek. Check. Desperate mid-night snack attack like there’s no tomorrow. Sip milk. Sip. Sip. Run around and spread the stench all over the bedroom. Check. Attack human. Check. Spasm. Sit on bed and lick some more gooey bug chemicals off paws. Human is 3 minutes away from running to a 24/7 vet clinic. Check. Human gets dressed and goes back in the bedroom to find cat asleep on cushion. Check. Neurotic mommy-must-watch-over-you-tonight. Check.

(…) Engleza este, de asemenea, limba imperială a vremii noastre. Imperiile pe care ea le-a generat și perpetuat sunt fie fluide, fie fragmentate în progresia lor. Diferența dintre imperiile britanic și american este succint sugerată de ororile domnului Kurtz. Personajul din Inima întunericului (The Heart of Darkness, 1902) a lui Joseph Conrad, bolnav de enigme atroce, rostește chiar în pragul morții tulburătorul “Oroarea! Oroarea!” care trece prin el. Renegatul Colonel Walter Kurtz, personajul interpretat de Marlon Brando în Apocalypse Now (1979) al lui Francis Ford Coppola, rostește în mod repetat “Oroarea!”, poate de 19 ori, înainte de a fi ucis o dată cu – precum și asemenea unui – animal sacrificial, într-un dublu montaj paralel. Între agentul comercial britanic, care din miezul întunericului african, trimite către metropolă fildeșul mai alb decât luna, și colonelul american, dezertor și creator al unui mini-imperiu în inima junglei sud-asiatice, diferențele apar prin repetiția “ororii”. Imperiul american e repetitiv, cel britanic – succint și tăios. Aristocrația celui din urmă duce către o barbarie soră cu barbaria provenită din pionieratul burghez al celui dintâi. Pe când Oroarea!, repetată de americanul Kurtz, e o palinodie – repetiție adictivă și apărare bâlbâită față de frica de moarte – cele două instanțe ale “ororii” britanicului Kurtz se despart – deși apropiate abstract, prin simetrie inversă și concret, ca ecou – de-o parte și de alta a morții. Semnul de punctuație al morții nu e punctul final, ci virgula (the comma). Oroarea de-a sfârși viața și de-a începe moartea leagă diferența absolută de repetiția lipsită de relativitate.
